The International Fertilizer Association (IFA) recently published the report "Short-Term Fertilizer Outlook 2025-2026," which analyzes the short-term evolution of the global fertilizer market. According to IFA estimates, global consumption of nutrients (N + P2O5 + K2O) reached a record 207.4 million tons in the 2024/25 fertilizer year and is projected to increase to 209.4 million tons in 2025/26, representing growth of approximately 1 percent. By 2026/27, consumption is expected to increase by 1.7 percent compared to 2025/26.
The report highlights that the projected increase for 2025/26 would be driven almost entirely by nitrogen (+1.7 percent), while P2O5 consumption would decrease slightly (-0.8 percent) and K2O consumption would register a very moderate increase (+0.6 percent), following strong growth observed in the previous two years.
From a regional perspective, IFA notes that more than half of the increase in global fertilizer consumption in 2025/26 will be concentrated in South Asia, driven primarily by India, followed by North America and East Asia. In the medium term, the organization anticipates that global consumption growth will accelerate again from 2026/27 onwards, provided that agricultural prices and fertilizer affordability improve, although significant uncertainties related to the international economic and geopolitical context remain.
